Food & Hospitality Professional

The College for Technical Education believes in a hands-on approach to teaching with students working in the kitchen, as well as learning the theory that accompanies the skills. Food prepared includes American regional, international and ethnic cuisines, vegetarian cooking, seafood, sauces, baking and desserts. Heavy emphasis is places on proper, yet imaginative use of ingredients, seasoning and plate presentation. This nine month program earns graduates a Food and Hospitality Professional certificate and prepares graduates for positions such as:

• Prep Cook
• Garde Manager
• Sous Chef
• Kitchen Manager
• Dietary Aide

Students keep on top of new developments in their industry with guest speakers who bring industry professionalism into the classroom with cooking demonstrations and discussions. Students will prepare a complete business plan as if starting a business from the ground up.

The College operates a full-service catering company, the Saute Cafe. Catering may provide food for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and special events in Lexington and surrounding counties. Select students, when catering is required, may have the opportunity to experience the catering events.

As with all CTE programs, heavy emphasis is placed on preparation for work in the industry, with regular discussions of what employers look for, how to get and keep a job, resume preparation, mock interviews, post-interview follow-up and networking skills. The Food and Hospitality program at CTE is an ideal choice for anyone wanting a thorough background in culinary arts.
